First you have to decide how you feel about this outcome. Is being bounced by the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs an acceptable outcome or an unacceptable one? I know it is the outcome, but we’re talking about setting the tone moving forward. So just for now, remove all the excuses.

Is this acceptable? Is it cool that the Grizzlies consistently make the playoffs, fight hard, but never really contend? If your answer is yes. Stop reading.

Grizzlies coach Fizdale after Game 6

Grizzlies coach David Fizdale talks about Mike Conley’s playoff performance.

“How do we get the Memphis Grizzlies, and this city, to hold this trophy and have a parade down Beale Street?” – David Fizdale

No. It’s not acceptable. Yes, there are reasons it might be expected.

Also: David Fizdale’s first year coaching curve. A roster full of rooks.

Of course there’s no single reason to blame. Parsons could have been healthy for the entire season and the Grizz still could have played and lost to the Spurs in the first round. It’s never just one thing.

I wanna put it on Gasol, but should I put it on the Grizz for not giving him a legit backup? For putting too much on him during the season? Should I put it on Chandler Parsons? Should I put it on the bad in-game decisions some of these guys made? Should I put it on Fizdale for his players making such bad in-game decisions?

How do I feel right now? Mike Conley deserves a standing ovation. I don’t wanna hear Marc Gasol speak.

In the biggest game of his career (because any elimation game in the playoffs should feel like the biggest game of a player’s career) he barely showed up. It appears he’s never going to be the guy who takes over a game when his team needs him to. He’s only going to be the guy who takes over a game when he wants to.

I know he hit a game winning shot five nights ago, but when he hit it he had 14 points and 8 turnovers. If he’d played like a superstar for the whole game, would overtime have been necessary? The game after that in San Antonio he had 17 points and 5 rebounds. How tall is he again? What position does he play?

No wonder he thinks stats are killing the game of basketball.

Tonight he honestly looked like he was ready for the season to be over.

Yes, he used to be underrated. Now there’s an excellent chance he’s overrated. I admit he’s improved. Immeasurably. But what’s the point if he packs it up in the playoffs? In crunch time? Really? Yes, I know basketball should be fun to watch, and when Marc Gasol is playing well I enjoy watching him. He never seems to play as well in the second half of the season though.

“It’s not on my agenda to prove people wrong, just prove the ones that believe in me right. That’s what I’m here to do.” – Mike Conley

I feel ya Mike, but does anyone believe Gasol left it out there on the floor this series? I do not. I also do not believe anymore that Marc Gasol is a centerpiece. Mike Conley is a centerpiece and if your goal is to get that parade on Beale Street, then he can’t be the only one. Unfortunately Gasol’s $19.69 million, along with Parson’s $22 million and Conley’s $27 million, will prevent the Grizzlies from adding another centerpiece quality player. This combined with the fact that there there’s gonna be way too much pressure on Chandler Parsons when he returns, and more expectation than he could ever live up to, means somebody has to go.

Or maybe not. Maybe second half of the season Gasol will start playing like first half, and Chandler will be a productive player and and and and and…. if changes aren’t made, we’re no closer to that parade.

And Gasol still won’t be to blame.
